A Branding Experiment: Which Do You Prefer?

You all know me as a graphic designer and illustrator, but I also dabble in personal projects. More so after I read Build a Business, Not Just a Client List. It touched upon one factor that really matters to me: building business assets. Creating alternate streams of income. For an artist, that can be many things. But I want to briefly share one idea that my friend and colleague, Dayne Henry Jr. (aka Romidion) are slowly building. In a nutshell, it is a community/studio of artists. I won't say more than that because there is one factor that makes this idea different from the rest.

Well, we've been talking about branding. As you know, that's a topic I love, because the possibilities are endless. We've come down to two ideas and we'd like your help in making the decision. But first...

Let me explain the meaning behind the name we chose, which is 8-Bit Robot. We both grew up in the 80's surrounded by all kinds of wonderful things that inspired us as kids. Shows like, He-Man, Thundercats, G.I. Joe, Voltron, Robotech and the Transformers. We were also fortunate to grow up when Nintendo came onto the scene and made a huge name for itself designing 8-bit video games. The funny thing is, all of these things are around today in different media. Even 8-bit games are being playing by today's generation. It seems what serves as nostalgia to us is still fun today and that's what 8-Bit Robot will be all about. Below you'll see two different logos and all you have to do is pick the one that speaks what I've just explained.

You can have a hand in branding a new business venture, so let us know what you think.

I prefer the second one. The first one feels very 'Atari' to me, which may or may not be the retro thing you're going for. :)

This sounds like a fun project.

I prefer the second one too. The icon is fabulous.

I like the first one because it is retro. Loved nintendo.

I agree the second.

Hey Dennis,
I prefer the second one, I'm sure both are your favorite that's why you asked for suggestion. I like the 2nd one because it also have a robot illustration. It feels like a brand you can rec right away.

I like the first one. Don't know why. Do we ever know why we prefer one over the other? LOL Anyway, beautiful graphics any way you slice it!

First of all, you're so f-ing talented it's making me jealous. Second, they're both fabulous so it's pretty darn difficult to decide which one is "best". I think I like the second one because it's easier to read and more comic book inspired.

Did you read "Love and Rockets"? by the Hernandez Bros? Your work really reminds me of theirs.

Wow, what a great response we're getting here. Awesome. Thank you all for participating.

@Sarah Good point.

@Martha Well, usually it's because one speaks to you over all the others. :)

@Heather What are you talking about? You're effin awesome. :)
Thanks for the compliment. I never got around to reading that book even though it was recommended to me years ago. I may have to finally check it out.

@Tricia I can definitely see Atari, but you say it like it's a bad thing. ;)

@Sheila Thank you!

So hard to decide, I like them both. The 2nd one has a colorful robot that is fun and has a personality so in the future he could be doing different things and be recognizable. Plus, after you like the colorful robot, you get curious what it is and see he has a really cool name! 8 bit robot! Nice!

Pick the top one! Pick the top one!

It just rings out retro with a splash of oriental - Love it!

Both are great - but I love the second one.

I like the first...for some reason the robot in that one just seems friendlier. I'm getting that 80s vibe you're talking about from it more as well. I like the color scheme of both - eye-catching and simple.

Definitely the first one. Great designs.

I prefer the second. The first with the large "pixely" robot takes a split second longer to register. While with the second, the robot is recognized straight-away. I do like both though. Great job!

Thanks everyone for your comments and opinions. It looks like the 2nd logo is the fave, but we hope more people will chime in. But between the blog and facebook, people have made their choice. :D

Both are great but the second one is clearer to my mind.
